TCTSY- Trauma Centre Trauma Sensitive Yoga

Trauma-Centre-Trauma-Sensitive-Yoga or ‘TCTSY’ is a Somatic (body-based) practice designed to help heal Complex-Trauma. It was founded in the early 2000’s by David Emerson & Jenn Turner in Boston USA, and is part of the Center of Trauma and Embodiment at JRI (The Justice Resource Institute).

TCTSY is recognised as an evidence-based intervention by for Complex PTSD by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration).

Complex Trauma is defined as chronic or on-going trauma within relationship. The effect of this can cause PTSD (Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder) in some people, with a feeling of disassociation / disconnection being a common symptom.

This feeling of disassociation can to seep into everyday life, leaving you feeling ‘separate’ from your body, unable to respond to your own needs and sometimes, quite literally, unable to actually feel parts of your body physically.

In a TCTSY session, you are invited to explore ‘having a body’ in a safe way. The body based practice can help to rewire the brain and encourage new experience of the internal self, safely. This can lead to increased feelings of empowerments and positive embodiment in your day to day life.

I am a qualified TCTSY- F (Facilitator) and offer group classes (these run intermittently throughout the year) as well as one to one sessions to suit you.

If you'd like to read more about the research being done on the efficacy of mind- body practices and trauma, here is an excerpt from the National Library of Medicine. "As a way to address physiological dysregulation and somatic symptoms, scholars have begun to explore the use of mind-body practices (Minton et al., 2006; Salmon, Lush, Jablonski & Septon, 2009). Techniques that increase mindfulness of internal states and physiological responses to internal and external stimuli have especially demonstrated promise in addressing the way trauma is held in the body (Follette, Palm, & Pearson, 2006; Ware, 2007). Recent studies have also shown that mindfulness-based interventions reduce PTSD symptoms and improve functioning by increasing the capacity to recognize, tolerate, and utilize internal states and ease the physical co-morbidities often associated with PTSD (Boden et al., 2012; Thompson, Arnkoff, & Glass, 2011; Vujanovic, Youngwirth, Johnson, & Zvolensky, 2009)."
