What Is TCTSY (Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga)?

Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is a body-based (somatic) practice specifically designed to support individuals healing from complex trauma. Developed in the early 2000s by David Emerson and Jenn Turner at the Center for Trauma and Embodiment (part of the Justice Resource Institute in Boston, USA), TCTSY is one of the few evidence-based interventions for Complex PTSD recognized by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration).

How Does Complex Trauma Affect the Body?

Complex trauma refers to repeated or ongoing traumatic experiences, which can lead to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and a range of somatic (body-related) symptoms. One of the most common effects is dissociation—a feeling of being disconnected from your body, emotions, or surroundings. This can make it difficult to:
✔ Recognize and respond to your own needs
✔ Feel physically present in your body
✔ Experience sensations or emotions fully

How TCTSY Supports Healing

TCTSY is not like traditional yoga—it does not focus on specific postures or achieving physical goals. Instead, it is a gentle, choice-based practice that helps you reconnect with your body in a way that feels safe and empowering. Through simple movements, breath awareness, and guided self-exploration, TCTSY encourages the brain to form new neural pathways, leading to a greater sense of embodiment, self-awareness, and empowerment in daily life.

What to Expect in a TCTSY Session:

🔹 Choice-Based Approach – You decide how to move in a way that feels right for you
🔹 No Physical Adjustments – Your experience is completely your own, without external pressure
🔹 Focus on Interoception – Encouraging awareness of bodily sensations in a safe and controlled way
🔹 Trauma-Informed & Evidence-Based – Rooted in neuroscience, psychology, and somatic healing

One of the main principles of TCTSY is Ahimsa, meaning 'non violence'. This is a yogic term and one of the 'yamas' in the 8 Limbs of Yoga. We are always aiming not to retraumatize, and be kind to ourselves and others.

I am a qualified TCTSY Facilitator (TCTSY-F) and offer both intermittent group classes and one-on-one sessions tailored to your individual needs.
