Meditation is not just about sitting in silence; it is a practice of cultivating awareness, acceptance, and self-compassion. However, this practice can be triggering for some survivors of trauma. Starting with a simple asana (body based) practice can help to find your way to meditation in a safe way.
Here are some ways meditation can assist in trauma healing:
1. Regulating the Nervous System
Trauma often keeps the nervous system in a heightened state of alertness. Meditation, particularly practices focused on the breath, helps to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, also known as the "rest and digest" state. This allows the body to relax, reducing feelings of anxiety and promoting a sense of safety.
2. Building Mindfulness
Mindfulness meditation teaches us to observe our thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations without judgment. For those with trauma, this can help break the cycle of intrusive thoughts and overwhelming emotions by creating space between the trigger and our reaction. Over time, mindfulness can foster a sense of control and empowerment.
3. Reconnecting with the Body
Trauma often causes disconnection from the body as a way to protect against pain or discomfort. Somatic-focused meditations, such as body scans, gently guide individuals to re-establish a relationship with their body in a safe and nurturing way. This reconnection is a key step in processing and releasing stored tension.
4. Cultivating Self-Compassion
Trauma survivors often carry feelings of guilt, shame, or self-blame. Loving-kindness meditation (also known as Metta meditation) emphasizes sending goodwill and compassion to oneself and others. This practice can help replace self-critical thoughts with kindness and acceptance.
5. Creating a Sense of Presence
Trauma pulls us into the past, replaying painful memories, or into the future, worrying about potential dangers. Meditation anchors us in the present moment, providing a respite from these mental patterns. With consistent practice, it helps create a safe space where healing can occur.
